Champion strengthens audit team with partner and manager promotions

Champion Accountants, a leading accountancy and business advisory group, has announced several key promotions and appointments within its Manchester audit division.

The move reflects the firm’s ongoing audit service growth, as more businesses and charities sought expert support and increased value.

Taking on the role of audit partner is Gary Woodall, a Champion team member for more than a decade, who recently achieved Responsible Individual (RI) status. In his new position, Gary will focus on expanding client relationships, refining audit processes, and driving operational excellence.

“I’m incredibly proud of how far our audit services have come – it’s a reflection of our team’s hard work and the lasting relationships we’ve built with our clients,” said Gary. “We don’t just perform audits; we partner with our clients to help them grow. One client came to us for a standard audit and, with our support, has since expanded globally, acquiring new subsidiaries overseas.

“Integrity, transparency, and professionalism aren’t just buzzwords; they shape everything we do at Champion. My focus will be on strengthening the team – developing their skills and creating opportunities for growth. I want each person to feel empowered to take on new challenges and confidently step into greater responsibility.”

Supporting Gary in the department’s leadership is David Coffey, who has been promoted to audit manager. David, a Champion veteran since his university graduation, will lead training and development initiatives while expanding Champion’s client portfolio.

“Starting my career with Champion straight out of university, I’ve had the privilege of building long relationships with clients and witnessing their growth firsthand. Being part of that journey is incredibly rewarding,” David said. “In the audit team, our role goes beyond compliance – we work closely with clients to uncover areas for financial improvement and deliver practical, actionable solutions. It’s a collaborative process, and our team excels because of their professionalism, expertise, and strong camaraderie.

“As audit manager, I’m committed to fostering growth and development within the team, ensuring that emerging talent has the tools and opportunities to thrive. Investing in people is key to retaining exceptional talent, and with Champion’s supportive environment, I’m excited to continue growing alongside the firm as we achieve even greater success.”

New to the team is Michael Henley, who joins the Manchester practice as audit & accounts senior.

Michael said: I’m thrilled to be joining such a dynamic and fast-growing department within a firm that’s so well-regarded across the region. What drew me to Champion was its reputation for genuinely supporting both clients and its team. The opportunities for growth and career progression here are exceptional.

“I’m excited to dive into the work, connect with clients, and collaborate with my new colleagues. Building strong relationships and learning from inspiring people is something I truly value. I look forward to contributing to the team’s ongoing success and being part of Champion’s continued growth story.”

Champion operates across practices in Manchester, Chester, Preston, and Blackpool, serving audit clients with turnovers ranging from £250,000 to £70 million+, including numerous overseas subsidiaries and parent companies.

The audit arm’s impressive growth over recent years was fuelled by rising demand from organisations seeking high-quality audit services without the steep price hikes imposed by some of the UK’s largest auditors. Champion handles a wide array of audit services, including statutory audits, grant-funded projects, and specialised assurance assignments.

With these new appointments, Champion is poised to further enhance its reputation as a trusted partner for clients navigating complex financial landscapes.
