HMRC are urging new businesses which need to register for VAT to do so online.

Registering for VAT online has now become easier, more secure and faster than using a paper form. As well as providing users with online help, the system provides an immediate on-screen acknowledgement when HMRC has received the application.

Around 4 out of 5 businesses now register for VAT online and those that do will be automatically enrolled by HM Revenue and Customs for its VAT Online Service, which is used to submit VAT returns online. Businesses certificates of registration will also be available online.

HMRC has also updated its VAT Online service with the addition of a new variation service which allows businesses to change their VAT registration details, as well as a new de-registration service for businesses which want to cancel their VAT registration.
