In March this year the government published regulations to increase the hourly rate of the National Minimum Wage (NMW) which comes into effect from Monday 1st October.
This will bring the NMW for adults aged over 21 to £6.19 and the rate for apprentices under the age of 19 or in the first year of their apprenticeship increases 5p to £2.65.
The maximum daily amount for living accommodation, which counts towards pay for NMW purposes, is also increased to £4.82 – a rise of 9p. Although if an employer does provide accommodation for their staff then they can count some of its value towards NMW pay.
These new rates were recommended by the Low Pay Commission, an independent body that was set up to advise the government following the National Minimum Wage Act 1998.
