The Company

Swinton Electro Plating has more than 50 years’ experience in hard chrome, electroless nickel plating and refurbishing services, provided globally from its premises in Swinton, Manchester.

The company’s surface engineering plant has an 8500mm deep hard chrome plating facility, one of the deepest in Europe, which allows it to take on almost any job. To remain ahead of competition and meet changing client needs, Swinton Electro Plating continues to develop and adapt its methods and techniques to create solutions that meet the changing landscape.

The Solution

Swinton Electro Plating has developed processes, systems and controls for the plating of large and unusually shaped objects, to overcome the challenges associated with plating consistency when involving mixed materials or difficult to handle sizes.

The team had previously looked into R&D relief but chose not to pursue further after a specialist adviser from the Manufacturing Advisory Service explained that they didn’t have anything unique enough to claim for.

Our specialist R&D advisors first visited the Swinton Electro Plating team in late 2014 and suggested they progress with R&D relief again. Since then, we have made a claim every year up to 2020.

“After being told we didn’t have anything to claim for, we gave up and didn’t really think about R&D again until Champion spoke to us about it.

“At first I was very sceptical and worried about the amount of work that may have needed to be done by my team. From start to finish Champion made the entire process simple and have made us more aware of what we do on a day-to-day basis that can be used for future R&D claims.’’
