Champion Round-Up | By Ged Cosgrove, group managing partner
July marks the halfway point of the year. It’s a natural opportunity to pause, look back at the goals we set in January and ask ourselves one simple question: are we still on track?
For some businesses, the honest answer is probably, “not quite”.
One thing we’re seeing is that the assumptions businesses made at the start of the year simply don’t reflect today’s trading conditions. Rising employment costs, changing legislation, continued economic uncertainty and the rapid pace of technological change have all reshaped the landscape in just a few short months.
The businesses that perform best aren’t necessarily those that stick rigidly to the plan they made in January. They’re the ones that regularly review their position, adapt to changing circumstances and make informed decisions based on up-to-date financial information.
That’s why July is such a valuable checkpoint.
Now is the time to pressure-test your business. Review your management accounts, understand your cash flow position, assess whether your margins and profitability are holding up, and ask whether your pricing, staffing and investment plans are still right for the market you’re operating in.
Good management information doesn’t just tell you what happened last month – it gives you the confidence to make better decisions for the six months ahead.
Small adjustments made now are often far easier – and far less costly – than major corrections later.
