HMRC is reminding those registering for online filing for the first time to do so by the end of the week, or they will risk missing the self assessment tax return deadline.

If you are filing online for the first time, you must register by Saturday 21st January to allow sufficient time for an account activation code to be posted out to you.

If you send an online return after 31st January you will be fined £100, even if you have no tax to pay and the more you delay, the more the penalty will increase.

31st January is also the deadline for paying any tax you owe for the 2010/11 tax year.

You can register to file your tax return online by visiting: www.hmrc.gove.uk/online
